Drug recall related to colonoscopies
Recently, the C.B. Fleet Company voluntarily recalled its oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medications, including Fleet® Phospho-soda® and Fleet® Phospho-soda® EZ-Prep® Bowel Cleansing System. If you used them as a bowel prep before your colonoscopy recently, it may be critical for your doctor to closely monitor your kidney function.
Prior to the recall, users of the bowel prep products Visicol or OsmoPrep were found to have experienced kidney damage. The type of damage is known as acute phosphate nephropathy (APN). The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered drug manufacturers to include warning labels on all OSP products.
Symptoms of APN
Acute phosphate nephropathy (APN) may only be detected in blood tests in the early stages of the disease, with no outward symptoms. This often prevents APN from being detected, leading to renal failure or even death. Symptoms to watch for include:
- Lethargy or drowsiness
- Decrease in urine
- Swelling of the ankles, feet and legs
